Clinton

Little Italy in the Hoosier state. That’s Clinton. Each Labor Day weekend people from all over Indiana and Illinois join Vermillion County residents, ready to experience a version of Italy’s finest offerings, such as real Italian cuisine and the finest wines Italy has to offer. From traditional Italian dances to the famous grape stomping and parade, Clinton is the place to be in early September. Many politicians and political hopefuls travel to the City of Clinton at this time to take part in one of the largest parades in the State of Indiana.

Elanco, who produces animal health and food safety drugs, serves as the City of Clinton’s top employer. The employer has made significant investments in the community and continues to show long-term desire to retain its current mission in the community. In addition, Infrastructure & Energy Alternatives (IEA), and White Construction, a subsidiary of IEA, are located in the City of Clinton, building new energy solutions for the future, centered in West Central Indiana.

Also, home to the former Newport Chemical Depot, the Vermillion Rise Mega Park, “The Rise,” touts over 7,000 acres of land, a shell building, and an endless supply of water infrastructure. The industrial site is waiting on its next big developer, ready to serve Indiana’s ever-growing economy.

Vermillion County has much to offer historians, but none more significant than the legacy of Ernie Pyle. Born in Dana, Indiana, Pyle became a celebrated World War II correspondent, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for his reporting. He had a particular affinity for infantry soldiers, often embedding with them on the front lines to witness what they endured physically, mentally and emotionally. In June 1944, Pyle made a direct plea to Congress, urging that U.S. troops in combat receive additional “fight pay.” Congress responded by passing what became known as the Ernie Pyle Bill, now recognized as combat or hazardous duty pay, ensuring financial recognition for those serving in combat zones. Pyle’s compassion and advocacy continue to impact our military and their families today. Killed in the Pacific theater on April 18, 1945, this farm boy from Dana left a lasting mark on the lives of soldiers and the nation.
